Q: What happens if i mix Humalog and Lantus together?
I have always been told that mixing the two is bad, but i can find anything one what it does to your body. Could some one please help me find this out? Thanks:)

A: generally, if you mix two insulins with different action times, you alter the respective time of each, causing one or both to peak early and might result in a hypoglycemic episode.

Q: Humalog mix 75/25?
I have been on Humulin R & NPH for many years. My doctor recently switched me to Lantus. I’m having to take 3 to 4 shots daily of Humulin R to bring my sugar down. I’m going to ask my doctor about the Humalog mix. How is the mix working for you?
Thank you both for your advice.I’m really not thrilled about the idea of going on the pump. I honestly don’t know if it would be financially possible. I’m very interested in going on Humalog 75/25 or Humalog 50/50 if my doctor will agree. The Lantus is doing nothing at all for me without 3 to 4 shots of Humulin Regular each day. My BS level was 82 this morning. I had a peanut butter sandwich and it jumped to 339 within a few hours. This is with Lantus in my system and without taking any R this morning. I’d rather try the Humalog Mix and take, hopefully, two shots a day. I took 30 units of Lantus last night.

A: the premixed insulin regimens (like humalog mix) have the advantage of being used only twice daily. They contain a rapid acting insulin (like humalog, and a intermediate acting one, like NPH). the problem is that this regimen is less flexible. It can cause hypoglicemias because the 2 types of insulin add their maximum effect 3 hours after the administration. The dose adjustment is hard too, let’s say you have hyperglicemia before dinner.the logic thing to do would be to increase the morning dose, but then a hypoglicemia can occur before noon.
From my experience in diabetes care (5 years only), I can tell that the premixed insulins don’t work so good in type 1 diabetes, they should be used for limited time, but many people choose this option because there are only 2 injections, not 4 or 5.

Your doctor (or yourself) have to adjust the dose of Lantus, in order to decrease the need for rapid insulin during the day.
Another option would be replacing humulin R with Humalog. (not humalog mix) This insulin acts faster, you can inject it right before the meal or even right after. Or Apidra .

Q: What is Humalog mix 25?
i know that is a medicine if u have diabetes, but i have a patient a filipino kid has one..

A: It’s a type of injectible insulin for diabetics. It’s used to replace that hormone in the body of someone who doesn’t make it themselves. Diabetics need insulin injections several times a day to survive. The insulin needs to be kept in the refrigerator.

People who take insulin and aren’t diabetic can have their blood sugar drop dangerously low. They can go unconscious, have seizures, and even die.

Q: Dose anyone know if i can mix lantis and humalog in one needle/?

A: No, absolutely not!

I use Lantus. One thing my endocrinologist and diabetes nurse both emphasized, was NEVER mix Lantus with any other insulin. The other insulins contain ingredients that will neutralize the Lantus or make it work all at once instead of over the whole day. Either way, it could be very dangerous for your health. You shouldn’t even inject them too close together.

I always inject my Lantus on my lower abdomen, and my rapid insulin higer up and on the opposite side so they aren’t too close. I switch sides daily, but within one day I do not inject them both on the same side. I always do the Lantus lower down, and the rapid insulin higher up to avoid getting them too close to the previous day’s injection.

The brochure for Lantus says never mix it with anything else. They even have this warning on their website…

DO NOT DILUTE OR MIX LANTUS® WITH ANY OTHER INSULIN OR SOLUTION. It will not work as intended, and you may lose blood sugar control, which could be serious.

Do not change your insulin without talking with your doctor.

The syringe must not contain any other medication or residue.

You should not use Lantus® if you are allergic to insulin. Lantus® is a long-acting insulin you inject just once a day, at the same time each day. You must test your blood sugar levels while using an insulin such as Lantus®.

Q: What is the difference between Humalog and Humalog 75/25?
I know that Humalog 75/25 is a mix. time delay or something, but what is the difference with just Humalog? can it be taken in the same way as the Mix? Does it need to be mixed with something in order to take?

A: Humalog 75/25 means that 75% of the mixture is long-acting insulin (same insulin except it has protamine added to make it act over an extended period of time), and 25% is short-acting.
Mixtures like this help keep tighter control of blood sugars because it sort of covers all bases – the quick coverage for your next meal (if you take it right before you eat) and the longer, steadier coverage to last all day.

Q: what would happen if you mixed humalog with a sugar food?

A: Dependent on the amount of Humalog you used, you could make a nice mushy mess.

What did you think would happen?

If you thought there may be a reaction in some way I’m afraid you’re mistaken. Insulin doesn’t work that way. What it does is it enable glucose, from the breakdown of carbohydrates and starches, to enter your body’s cells in order to make energy.

Q: i accidently mixed humalog into my lantus, is my lantus still good?

A: In the past we had to mix long acting w/ short every day. I don’ t know if this is the case w/ the two newer insulins, but I’d DEFINITELY record what the ratio of the mix is, and keep track of how much Humalog is in each dose you take out. If it was just a small bit, like 10 – 20 units in a whole bottle of Lantus, I wouldn’t even worry about it.

Q: They say, “Don’t mix Lantus or Levemer with other insulins.” Have you?
What will happen? Will you explode?

I’d like to try mixing to reduce my injections which have doubled ever since they took Ultralente off the market. Has anybody tried mixing with Regular or Humalog? Were there any bad effects? Did insulin potency change? How about the time course of the blood sugar reduction differential?
Well, so far ther are some informative answers, but nobody has answered the question yet. Has anyone done it?
Anita (Uh-neat-duh) brings up a good point. Why don’t “they” tell us the consequences of mixing on the labeling of the product? Just about every other drug out there tells you the consequences, or side effects, of using the product any differently than recommended. Blonde206’s answer is pretty good implying that I could alter the time course of my long acting insulin by mixing. This is actually a good thing to know, if it works. I am still holding out on this answer waiting to see if anyone has tried it, even if by accident. Most likely, however, based on the other answers, I doubt anyone has actually done it.

A: I don’t know about Levemir, but with Lantus, it’s a BAD idea. The Lantus is long acting because it’s acidic. You inject it, your body neutralizes, and a lump of crystallized insulin forms. Your body breaks down this lump over 24 hours, hence the 24 action of Lantus. If you mix it with R or H, those too will become acidic, and then they will get broken down over 24 hours too. The result? No fast acting insulin and too much long acting insulin. You’ve had diabetes long enough to know what a problem that is.

Q: Has anyone found a good alternative to Ultralente?
Ultralente has been discontinued. Has anybody found a viable alternative to this ultra long-lasting insulin that can be mixed with Humalog?
historymanic,
Levemer, Detemer, and Lantis CANNOT be mixed with Humalog. Ia m asking for long lasting insulin that mixes with Humalog. I get the feeling I may be SOL. Thanks a frikkin’ lot, Elly Lilly & Co, for discontinuing a product that keeps me alive. Frikkin’ jerks.
Bettie,
I’ve tried Lantus. It makes me sick, plus it requires me to double the amount of times I have to inject because I can’t mix. The Ultralente was perfect. I am really worried that I won’t be able to find a good combination. It took a lot of experimenting through combinations of Humalog, Regular, NPH, and Lente before I found Ultralente. I hear lots of animals depending on insulin will die because Ultralente worked well for them and required less injections by their owners. Owners will feel less inclined to let these animals live if they have to inject them twice as much.
Blonde,
Mixing is important because I already inject 4x a day. Two w/H&U and 2 just H.
With the inability to mix, that ups me to 6 injections a day. I don’t know about you, but I would prefer a viable Ultralente substitute than to up my injections and take insulin that makes me sick.

A pump is crap because I can’t rely on batteries. I enter remote places at extreme temperatures for extended time periods. It might work for the average joe-shmoe, but not for me.
It’s not an issue about hurting. It’s the frikkin’ hassle of an additional 2 shots daily and feeling sick on a different insulin. It really bites that just my well-doing insulin was discontinued. I was doing well on my regimen. Levemer I guess is my only last option. Hopefully it won’t make me sick like the others. As I stated already, pumps bite for extreme conditions, just like bg meters. I miss the old color coded test strips that worked in any conditions and did not require batteries because they required no meter.

A: Unfortunately, the insulins you could mix, you don’t want to use and the rest can’t be mixed. I’m not sure why you can’t use a pump. You say the pump won’t work for you, which would be the best alternative for you…so I think you might be right, you’re sol. Levemir is supposed to be a lot better than Lantus…it might work for control, but of course that won’t help you with taking less injections. Sorry, sucks.

Q: What is the best insulin these days?
I am type I diabetic since I was 10, I’m 38 now, i have been in perfect control during all these years. But my body has changed, the way i used to feel when my sugar was low is not the same, i cant feel anything so its so easy to loose controland when my sugar is high i feel like if it was low, its a mess!!!! i have been taken Humalog for years about 5 or 4 units every time i eat and 4 units of 30/70 when i go to bed but my new doctor says I need to change it for 30/70 mix and stop usin humalog. I did it but my sugar was so high. What should i do?

A: Your doctor seems antiquated with his/her treatment suggestions. NPH is not the most reliable insulin, plus you are tying yourself down to having to restrict food and eat on a schedule. Most type 1s I know either are pumping or they take multiple daily injections. The ones on MDI take a basal insulin as lantus of levemir once a day, and then take an injection of rapid acting insulin as humalog, novolog, or apidra with meals. I suggest you talk to your doctor and tell him/ her that the 30/70 mix alone is not working for you. He or she needs to work with you to help find something that does work. If your doctor is ridged in his/her treatment and refuses to be flexible, you should start looking for a new doctor.

Q: could I SKIP SNACKS WHILE I AM ON LANTUS +HUMALOG(I INJECT THEM SEPARATELY NOT MIXED)?
THE DIABETES WERE RECOMENDED TO HAVE SNACKS BETWEEN MEALS IN ORDER NOT TO HAVE HIPOGLYCEMIA. NOW WITH LANTUS AS BASELINE AND HUMALOG FOR COVERING THE MEALS .IS IT ADVISEABLE TO AVOID SNACKS AND HAVE 3 MAIN MEALS BREAKFAST,LAUNCH AND DINNER?

A: with that combo of insulin you should not go more then 3 hours wityh out food. That is during the day when you are active

Q: Diabetics on insulin?
Is anyone on here taking the insulin Humalog Mix 75/25? If so, how many units do you take and is it working for you? I’ve been on it for about 6 months and my blood sugars are still to high. My HA1C was 8.5 yesterday. I am just wondering if anyone here has had success with this insulin.

A: When I was first starting to go on insulin, my doctor was going to give me the Humalog Mix, but she changed her mind and give me just Humalog, because she said that it didn’t work for everyone. Also, I do take Lantus at bedtime. My A1C was 7.9- not great, but better than it was before.

The trick with most insulin, is to make it work for you. I have a baseline which I start from – 17units at breakfast and lunch which for me is for about 30 grams of carbohydrates at those meals, and 25 units for 45 grams of carbohydrates at dinner. And then I go up from there, if I am having more carbohydrates.(about 5 units for every 10 grams of carbs). This was specifically designed for me by a Diabetes educator. If you haven’t seen one, then perhaps you can ask your doctor about a referral. They will be able to work out a plan that works for you.

Also, talk to your doctor about the possibility of changing your insulin. Most of the time it is trial and error, poking until they get it right.

Good Luck to you, I hope this helps.

Q: Mixing two types of Insulin, Need Help. Please!?
Hi all,

I am Type-1 Diabetic patient and recently I have started using Insulin. First, I was prescribed Humulin 70/30 but my blood sugar was not adjusted.
I was then prescribed with Humulin R and Humulin N to be mixed together. I notices that Insulin R was working better than N.

Now I want to ask another question.

Are there any patients that are mixing Humalog/Lispro with Insulin R or Just using Humalog/Lispro alone. Can I control my sugar better with these two or single alone?

My readings are either in 250mg/dl+ or as low as 50mg/dl. I want to stabelize my blood glucose level

Please help me out! There is no specific diabetic guidance centers in my country, My only hope are you people with experience.

I am 22yrs old.

Thanks

A: What? There are no specific diabetic guidance centers in America? You’ve either got to be joking, or you’re not aware of where they’re situated.

First of all, Humalog/Lispro is what’s termed a bolus (fast-acting) insulin, which is taken at times of eating. This would not give adequate cover unless you were using a pump. (With a pump, insulin is infused continually over any 24-hour period so there’s no need for a longer-acting insulin.)

Humulin R has a period of action that lasts anywhere from 4 to 12 hours, so it may not be providing you with a long enough duration of operation to act as a normal basal rate of insulin would. (The basal rate is equivalent to the tiny amounts that a healthy pancreas would be offering to the system over any 24-hour period.)

You’re obviously being prescribed your insulin from a doctor somewhere, so I’d advise you to go back to that doctor and explain the sorts of blood sugar levels you’re getting. (I’m sure you already realise that blood sugar levels of 50 mg/dL are too low, and you, undoubtedly, need to take remedial action to prevent you slipping further into hypoglycemia.)

Put simply then, having been diagnosed as type 1, you will, unless you’re using a pump, need to have a combination of two insulins … the longer acting one to act as a basal dose, and the shorter acting one to act as a bolus dose.

I wish you the very best of luck in getting your doctor to review your medication.

I hope you have a long, happy, healthy, and trouble-free future.

Q: Diabetic info please !!!!!! ???????
I am a 11 year diabetic and really have never had good sugars except when I was pregnent in 2006.I am 28 and I take humalog 75/25 mix three times a day 100 units each time. Also take byetta .My sugars are super high.I need help my doc says there is nothing else she can do.I was wondering what insulin and pill combinations yall are taking so I can maybe help myself.
Yes my doc is a endocrinologist.

A: There is always something a doctor can do to help lower your blood sugar. First I would suggest you get another doctor. My husband went through this same thing. He stayed with his doctor, which just kept going up on his insulin. This doctor was not doing anything to help my husband. He almost died because of it. My husband finally changed doctors and it has made all the difference in the world!

This is what my husband’s new doctor did for him:

1. He took him off his old insulin and put him on 5 units of NovoLog at breakfast and lunch, and 7 units at supper. Then 45 units of Levemir at bedtime.

2. He also sent my husband to a dietitian, who designed a diet just for him. He gets 2000 calories a day and gets 5 carbohydrates choices at a meal. This has been wonderful! He has lost 65lbs. in a year! His blood sugars use to run 250 – 300, now they are in the normal rang of 60 – 120.

3. This new doctor found that his kidneys were not filtering properly and he immediately got him an appointment with a kidney specialist. He has 3rd stage renal failer, which 5th stage is complete failure. This was caused by his blood sugars staying high for so long and high blood pressure. By working with the kidney doctor, and staying off salt and things that his kidneys have trouble filtering, he is doing better. The doctor said he couldn’t restore the damage that is already done, but could with my husband’s help in watching what he eats may delay or even prevent stage 5 renal failure.

I am wondering if you have been to see a dietitian. A good diet plan goes a long way in keeping a person’s blood sugar in control. If you have not been, I would suggest you talk to your doctor about getting you an appointment with one.

Also exercise can burn calories and bring down your blood sugar.

There is no quick fix for getting and keeping a person’s blood sugar under control. This is a minute by minute, and day by day thing. As you can see in the case of my husband. It is one of the hardest things that we have ever tryed to deal with, but we finally found the right answers for my husband.

I probley don’t have to tell you that it is very important that a diabetic keep his or her blood sugar as normal as possible because of the complication from diabetes. It can cause heart trouble, my husband had to have a stent put in. He had a 90% blockage. Tiny blood vessels can bleed behind the eye, which can lead to blindness. Neuropathy feet and hand pain. My husband has this in his feet, which keeps him from getting a good night sleep. Very painful. Renal failer and much more!

Please take care of yourself. I have been dealing with my husband’s diabetes for about 18 years. I am also a diabetic. My heart goes out to all diabetics, I know what a struggle it is on a daily basis

I sure hope this helps. Good luck with your diabetes.

Have a blessed day, and Happy New Year!

A: This is fluid just watch your salt intake the next three days and you will be alot better. Drink plenty of water and Sodium Free Diet Rite. I would eat no sodium foods for three days. This should remove the swelling. I get this too when I eat chili and tacos or just about anything in excess. You just ate too much at one time.
